The old version of the forum used a cookie timeout to mark threads read. That meant that after a certain amount of time logged in (900 seconds) threads would be marked read, even if you hadn't opened them. In this version there's the option to store that info in a table, so that the only way threads/forums will be marked read, is if you actually open them, or intentionally mark them read. Just a head's up.

JP,

Is it possible to get a "mark forums read" tab onto the display new posts page so one doesn't have to backpedal to select the tab at the top before logging out?

Thanks

There's one on every page, in the navbar under quick links dropdown

Thanks

Just seeing that link for the first time. I was looking for it at the bottom of the page like it is on the "top" page of the forums.

For individual forums, it's under forum tools dropdown.

any chance of having a quick link to "recent threads" that you've posted in? Or is there one that already exists, instead of going to see all my posts through my profile? Would be handy, almost like a complete forum (Hardware, Operating Systems, Etc...) but dedicated to recent threads we've posted in. Sorry if i've overlooked it if it already exists.

There is a way you can do that now, but it's not at all obvious. If you choose "no email notification" in user cp>>options, then each thread you post in you will be subscribed to, but your inbox won't be inundated with new post emails (unless you want that, then choose 1 of the other options). Then you can click on subscribed threads in your userCP and get all the threads you've posted in, newest to oldest.

Sorry, I should've also mentioned there's a subscribed threads link in the quick links dropdown.

I think that's a much better idea. What's the point of marking threads read when they aren't?

Well the only plus with the old method is the DB would be a little smaller. But this doesn't seem to be a problem here so I implemented it.

Moira,

If you keep things marked as "read" then you can just tab "new threads" and see whats happening now. This way you don't have to visit all the discussion areas to see the posts.

There are times when you know that a thread doesn't interest you by the title. Or you have read enough of the threads replies. Just mark them as read and they go away.

Well yes ... but if you were the sort of person who really wanted to see unread posts then it would be annoying to have the software mark them as read before you actually saw them. I can think of an example in moderating a forum. You have to see all new posts no matter how little they interest you, so having them flag up as new posts is particularly useful.

It was annoying. It was a 900 second cookie-based timer that started when you loaded the page logged in. Rather inefficient and I missed a lot of new posts myself that way. I have to peruse 30 forums during the course of the day so I usually just check the main page for new post icons. When I don't see'em, I assume there are none.

I can imagine it would be rather annoying, yes :D
