Video Editing Packages

Hi PPL

I have been trawling the internet for some kind of video software package, that will allow a just a stand user to create a video and burn the finished project to a movie i.e. avi or DVD preferably both and more if possible and it needs to support a MiniDV or DV Camcorder.

I was hoping to try a trial version with the option to buy, as I would be stupid to purchase software to find out that it incompatible.

Currently the user has pinnacle studio version 10.08, however once the user goes to create the disk

He receives the following error "No disk writing device found!"

Due to group policies automatically applied on his computer he cannot be given administrator rights (won't want him to have them anyhow)

Could anyone point me in the right direction. The user is running Windows XP SP3 2GB of ram don't and bulit in graphics card.

Any advise would be greatly appreaciated even just links or other specialist forums.

What is the user doing video editing on a computer where he isn't allowed administrator privileges? He/She is either editing video at a company where he should be doing something else, or should be allowed administrator rights... Unfortunately adobe just released their CS4 line of products so trials aren't really available but you can sign up for trial when they are available here or you can just try cs3 from a trusted download site like here. Like SirDice said above it isn't cheap but it is really really good, especially when paired with other adobe products :)

Your best and cheapest bet, would be to go out and purchase a new LG or LiteOn DVDRW Drive..... Both LG & LiteOn provide bundled software - I have seen the PowerDVD package a number of times and it will cover everything you have said you want :)

Have a look at that, i'm not sure if it is able to do what you want, but it is free and it is one nice burning app. :)

Agreed. It is my favorite editor (I used to work for a tv station). I think its about $500 but I love Premiere.


Just an FYI - The standard in video editing is FinalCut Pro and Avid is also very popular.

Thanks for the advise so far, but will Adobe Premiere allow a standard user to write disks. As pinnacle has a bulit in movie creator after you have finished with the project.

I know that Nero has a burning rights utility. I was wondering if you get a similiar setup with a video editing program. As it seems to be a bit of inconvenience to create the project with Pinnacle (or another program like Adobe Premiere) and then have to burn the project using a seperate program, when the program (Pinnacle) has it built in. Basically the process is import the raw file, and then modify and then hopefully burn the file.

In responce ArPaNET comments about he/she should be doing something else or should be allowed administrator rights. The user is creating training videos for the shopfloor operators. There is much better ways of doing it then creating DVD's i.e. movie files lauched from some sort of webpage, however he wants to do it that way and I don't have time to assist him. I would never allow users to have administrator rights as it open for abuse due to deliberately or accidentally. Which has occured in the past at the firm I work for.

Absolutely, it is as easy as saving a file with premiere! But seeing as how he is creating training videos adobe premiere is like using a tank to destroy a teddy bear :D... if your looking for something that can just add titles and some cute transitions then I would just use windows movie maker. It is free and will easily make training videos!

FinalCut Pro is for Mac not PC so that is out the window (although I completely agree, if I could get my hands on that sweet piece of $2000 software...) and Avid makes Pinnacle.

The user tried Windows Movie maker, however when playing the video back it was all pixelated. I see your point, if the user is struggling a little bit with Pinnacle. He would be really stuck with Premiere.

I don't know where to go from now but I appreciate the advise you and everyone else that has been given to me, as I know it is waste of time even considering premiere due to his competency level.

He has bought a video editing package (without consulting me) So if the software is no good he can get on with it. If he gain some success with it though, I will post the name of the software solution.

I think he meant Avid Pro. Now that's a serious piece of video editing software. Seriously expensive too..
