would linux without xwindows use less system resources/ram and stuff like that? also, does linux (or xwindows) support plug and play, so if I put in a new nic or somethin, I don't have to screw around with the included drivers and that stuff?

Yes, linux without xwindows requires fewer resources to run. Plug and play is supported by a modular kernel (default in redhat) and a program called kudzu that finds your hardware. Just run kudzu from the command line or leave it running as a system service.

You still may have to play with drivers, plug and play is for configuring IRQ and I/O, etc. You may have to install a driver.
