    Any program recommended other than firewalls
    I just thought it was funny that he made this statement, yet almost EVERY reply said, use a firewall....

    It would help if we knew what OS you are using. I will assume it is Microsoft, unless you are runnning Samba on linux (in which case you don't want to close 139). And probably 98 or ME, considering it is port 139... Actually, a better question is what is running on port 4783? It shouldn't be to hard to get rid of that one port....

    I believe port 139 is mIRC and i'm guessing 4783 is an Instant messenger client of some sort. Instead of a firewall you can use a proxy on everything or something but no matter who you ask they are going to reccomend a firewall. Why cant/dont you want to use a firewall? What i do is just run everything through a freebsd machine that has a firewall script and a proxy server. Works just fine for me, so theres an option if you cant run a firewall on your local machine.

    No, port 139 is NetBIOS and port 4783 is unassigned. Just wanted to clarify...
