At no point are we inventing something that isn't there. We only take existing concepts and link them, creating 'new' concepts. Those are in turn taken and linked. Essentially, meme evolution... but we never just come up with a completely new idea.
Lateral thinking is just concepts linking in surprising ways (possibly some kind of random associated thought process connecting the two for just long enough)... or perhaps two concepts being activated simultaneously by different stimulie.
