I think you should start at the roots of this whole mess. Why not do a time line on viruses? Start from the beginning, and work your way to present.

There have been lots of tools kits. One of my fav's was the nowhereman's VCL. If you PM me I've proably got a copy. Might even google for it perhaps. It was quickly noted by McAfee, and anything produced by it was picked up by McAfee's Anti-Virus. Skamworks put out one that did Macro Viruses. These are just some that I have used, evaluated, tested, ect. Infected myself many times. No not accidentaly either. Wanted to learn how to clean up after an infection. Worst virus I ever ran into was NYB...New York Beauty, or as I liked to call it the New York Bitch. Pc booted to a black screen, font=red, "NYB back for good". Pc didn't post, do not pass go do not collect two hundred dollars. Was a SOB to clean up.

I have a few links for you. HERE and
    HERE

Helpful or not, there is my two cents.

    Good luck with your paper

There are two types of virus writers:
1] Real Coders ... those who have advanced skilled sets and can program from scratch and comprehend virus code ... most of them understand and have learned more then one programming language ... [ There are probably only a few of these ... ]
2] Script Kiddies ... these just wannabies who use virus kits , or understand little or just enough programming to modify the code in a virus ... [ These abound like ants ... ]
viruses can be coded in various programming languages and with script languages as well :
    -- Assembly
    -- C++
    -- VBScript
    -- many others ...

Here's the website of a real virus write called "gigabyte". If you dont know who she is well here's a brief summary. She is a 19 year old Belgian virus writer who has coded many viruses. Which among them includes a virus called "Sharpie", which is a proof of concept virus writtern for the .Net platform coded in the C# language.

There is only three virus which have been code in C# programming language so far.

    This is gigabyte's homepage
    www.coderz.net/gigabyte

You also might find this link useful it is an exclusive interview with the virus writer herself ... They show a picture of her but it's blurred out ...

    http://www.techtv.com/news/security/...382211,00.html
-- they talk about how she got interested into programming
-- a litte bit about the "Sharpie" virus and Microsoft
-- tadbits of her personal life
    etc etc ....
[ I think that if you added info like this to your project your teacher will probably find it very interesting ...what do you guys think ??]

As for tools here's some links ... links to where you can download the tool ...
    Tool Name - Summary
VBS Worm Generator -- Used by the 20-year-old man in Holland known as “OnTheFly”
used it to write the Anna Kournikova worm.
-- Created by an 18-year old hacker from Argentina named
    Kalamar.

Here is another site which will be of great interest :
    http://www.labmice.net
http://home.snafu.de/madokan/mvic/viruscont.html -- click on this link since it will contain the info for which you are in need .... has a lot of Virus Creation Kits which you can download for your project ...

To find out info about a specific virus creation kit just go to google and type the name of the kit and browse through the pages that interest you the most ...

Give this links a try they contain a lot of info ...
    [This is a virus bulletin]
[ This are all virus companies ]

Hope that this info is helpful to you .....

[Funny you should ask that question...last week I finished a book called "Steal This Computer" which belongs to my friend. In the book they have a chapter on how people write vir's[script kiddies, ect], how the said people write these programs/types [C++, VB Script, etc], and the most common reason's for doing to. When I get home I'll post the books reasons along with the citation info that you will need....Or you can e-mail at the address below.]

King of CaveMen first ,i think, you have to tell the difference between script kiddie and the real programmer - hacker, cracker, virus writer (whatever) which i hope you know. Then you should decribe the difference between the real virus that intrude your system by certain holes and not by an idiot or a defenceless person that download a file by luck (for the "virus writer") by a link without checking the source, but just running the file and then see the effect. The real virus should not let you use your PC "normally" even after a format of disk, that moment mention the blaster and sobig virus as a successfull examples.
I don't have much time so i end this post here, i hope i helped. I know i didn't, but after several months without posting i lost my form ;P.
    Thanks for suffering me.

Although i personally belive that virus writing is wrong. Its fine for fun. But when you release it onto a system malicously then thats taking it too far. Plus today its very rare youll find someone actaully writing an origional virus...now a days youve got script kiddies and crackers using programs already made sending out obsolete viruses.

It take more skills to write something like NMAP than a VB script like the I love You virus. I wonder who are the real hackers that ones that do all the TCP/IP programming or the ones that just simply use the programs that are already well documented out there?
