As far as I remember i read somewhere that SP2 will released in September this year and after final release it will be in single file format like SP2 RC2. And as far as automatic update is concerned, yes you have to turn it on to get SP2, as posted on microsoft.com site
"Automatic Updates is the only way to download SP2 from Windows Update at this time. Other methods to install SP2 will be available soon."
Maybe after full release you can get it in form of CD or single downladable file.
It\'s all about sense of power.

If you want to download and install SP2 on multiple computers then visit and download from :: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
or else you might want to visit www.microsoft.com for more information,
as far as your question about when it will be relesed through windwos update its not clear although it might be released by end of this week. but if you have enabled automatic update you'll get it before its released through windows update site. you might want to scan your computer for update once because for downloading SP2 you need WIndows update V 5.0.... and with pre-installed or cd the download version bundled is V4.0...

SP2 for XP Home is already release if you use Automatic Update! Until the 25, they are only 25000 users per days that can download it. After 25, it’s free for all only if you are using Home Edition and use Automatic Update!

After a nine-day postponement, Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday plans to start pushing out Windows XP Service Pack 2 to PCs running Windows XP Professional Edition.
Taken off guard by the large number of business customers who rely on the Windows Automatic Updates feature for patches, Microsoft last week postponed automatic distribution of the mammoth service pack. The software maker sent a note to corporate customers saying the delay was in response to requests for more time to install a registry key that will block the automatic delivery of SP2.
