Easily, they are not mutually exclusive.

You can protect children AND protect freedom of speech for adults at the same time.

All of my sites have been manually registered with all of the user-end content filtering software packages, are all designated as adult sites, all carry meta-tags designating them as adult sites that are obeyed by all filtering packages and browsers properly configured, and have No Follow rules in place for the search engines to stop them from going past the warning pages. Where appropriate, they all also have Federally Mandated Labeling language on them.
