to around the question is not pointless. In theory is this not a question about time. This is statistics, there is the possibility to have a monkey who makes the work. This would be very strange but this is true otherwise we didn't talk about probable things but about certain things.Quote:

Yes the question IS :will the monkey EVER produce the works. I think we all both the answer to that one. To around that question is pointless(although VictorKaum will disagree) NO.
I will look up some physics on this...
If the monkey is given forever yes he may do it but we have gone past the life of the universe or I'm wrong.
I too will look up some physics on this it's been a long time since I've done any 21 yrs. but you on the right path VictorKaum it is probable.:)
Just what I was thinking, thor. It's a physical impossibility for the monkey to live forever. That increases the odds against him because all of a sudden he has to write shakespeare in a very short time period.
Are you allowed to point out the correct keys for the monkey to type?
I never thought mentioning this thread as an example of good flames would resurrect it into a discussion of monkeys. I'm sorry, freeOn.
Well, what if it isn't that we can't understand it with our knowledge... But that we don't have the knowledge to answer whether or not we can even try to comprehend it?Quote:

I'm certain that a thousand years from now people will look back and joke: "And they believed in (pick one (WAVES!)/(PARTICLES!)) Hah! How could they do that?"
Perhaps another way... aren't we getting a bit above ourselves if we start to assume that we know that we can not comprehend The Creator/Insert-Your-Belief-Here? What if we can, we're just too confident in our comparatively myopic current view of the universe to accept the possibility that it may come with *snicker* time.
Alternately... we ARE the Eternal. What's there to know?

Isn't that what we do now.:)
He 'may' do it? He WILL do it, no discussion there ;)Quote:

We're so cruel and unfeeling. We haven't established whether the monkey WANTS to spend eternity working on something to inane. What about it's feelings? :D (even if time ends someday, it's eternity, right? Till the end of time...)Quote:

I mean, what if he wanted to do something else, like the collected works of Isaac Asimov, or Tolstoy? Or maybe the Bible (-as-we-know-it)?
10 to the 40th is no where near infinity. The bards works do reside somewhere in infinity, problem is we have only expanded out to 10 to the 41st (by now) lol... Infinity goes for infinity for I have cut the bunggee!!!!!
As we get older our willingness to protest goes down, youth is where it is at. Problem is a lot of the youth of today are satisfied. Eat at my table oh youth of today and be satiated sayeth the darklord. Look around where are the real protests in the world today??? The poorer countries!!! We are fat and happy!!:(
And the leaders know that:(
O my God.....I can't believe WHAT I'm reading here.
I guess my real point was to show the utter absurdity of life arising on its on without input from intelligence.(of any sort).
But lets get back to that poor monkey. Lets say his typing skills are hit and pick in a random manner. He has no conception of words..syntax..grammer .He produces every single word that he gets right in a totally RANDOM manner. Each time he types one single charecter wrong...he has to go back to the begining. He types(in a random fashion) 2 charecters per second.Lets give the age of the universe at 15 billon years.I stand behind my original statement....this immortal monkey does not have enough time to produce the entire correct sequence of charecters that make up shake's works. Yes given enough TIME it could happen...but there is not enough we only have 15 billon years. If you don't like my estimate well DOUBLE IT because it won't happen in 30 billion years either.
