Whatever gets the job done for you without pissing you off. For me, Panda and Norton for full scans and then Mcafee's stand alone program called Stinger is great for mass scanning ( it only scans for the newest viruses though.)
Try what you want -
Mcafee - Trial (Stinger is free)
www.mcafee.com
Norton - Trial
www.symantec.com
Panda - Free
www.pandasoftware.com
AVG Antivirus - Free
www.grisoft.com
Bit Defender - Free
www.bitdefender.com
These are the only ones I would reccommend. So just try these out and see what works best.
in my opinion kaspersky is the best.. not free, but trialware

As an alternative to a program, you can try Trend Micro's Housecall . Always the newest definitions, without any of the [sarcasm] "hassle" [/sarcasm] of installing a program and updating the defs.
slick
The best antivirus system is end-user education.
Existing anti-virus systems are obsolete.
New types are being developed as we speak, dealing primarily with worms at first, but you get the idea. This will allow systems to detect and defend unknown malware.
For further reading, (much of which based upon: http://www.darpa.mil/ato/programs/dqw.htm ) give a read over the attached pdf document.
catch
i think that norton is the best. its great cause its free.
Great recommendations and comments, but the bestest or greatest is useless unless you keep it completely updated and also layer your protection with AV, Spyware detection stuff, Firewall, etc., and keep them updated as well.
cya
norton is free?
what are you saying dude?
are you drunk?
norton has a great support.i won't recommend any av software.i will just say that i had a box infected by netsky and the updated version of f-secure couldn't do anything at all .i just downloaded the fixnetsky from symantec.com and that's it.....
I am a huge fan of trend micros PCCillin. My version checks every 3 hours ( you can change this to your liking) it also gives you a heads up display if theres a new virus in the wild, and will ask you to update.
great user console comes with a firewall and doesnt seem to take up near as much cpu usage as norton
i got the full version of norton, including antivirus, ghost and firewall completely free.
Would you mind telling us HOW?
Deathmetal - Is that the same Norton from this post?

The best antivirus is don't connect to the net, or install downloaded stuff.LOL just kidding. I agree with most norton is great with stuff like adaware, hijackthis, and update.update.update. you can't go wrong. Then if you get a virus come here, if you can!!!!
cheers
It's amazing how many people won't pay the money to keep their virus subscriptions up to date. $20 for a year of updates or $80 an hour for repairs. Oh well..stupidity is good for business.
I had Norton for quite a while, but now I chose Mcafee 8.0 which is quite nice and specially less "RAM-eater". That's why I use it now.
I'm curious to see how many on this site WOULD pay to have their PC repaired... The last case scenerio (reformat) typically takes about an hour at best...Quote:

Linux as a nonroot user.
(couldn't resist)
No anti-virus will protect you if you allowed your computer to go online without a firewall for starters and this is just for starters. There are so many areas to protect in the mean time.Quote:

This is a good antivirus as well:
NOD32

I, think Avast! 4 is the best out there right now.
Been very good to me and found bugs that others have not.
All of u just counted one aspect in ur judgement. But observe that with Norton AV, ur system becomes too slow even if that is high end P-4, McAfee cannot repair or even catch some viruses, and Kerspsky is a nice but not high end. Now come to AVG Professional (latest version 7.247), but i have 7.245, it catches all the viruses(100% only antivirus ranking), and the system uses is just 0.2-0.4 for onfly file scanning and 8% for normal virus scanning. isn't this is the nice one. no antivirus comes inbetween when u use it just for once. Go and get it... and try
Moreover I would like to say, get Adaware for the malware , which i catch efficiently
