ok another portion :)
it has come to my attention that win 2k pro's minimum requirement of 64 MB ram is wrong
thats for adv server win 2k pro's minimum requirement is 32 MB ram
thanks uraloony :) and after all people give me some slack hehe it was 5 am :P
and i wouldnt exactly run win 2k pro on 32 MB personally but you can experiment with it :)
now, guess i can finish up some things where i kinda left you hanging :)
ok CAL (Client Access License) Gives client computers the right to connect to computers running windows 2000 server so that the client computers can connect to network services, shared folders, printer resrouces, etc. when win 2k pro is installed, the network admin msut choose a CAL mode: Per Seat or Per Server
The Per Seat licensing mode requires a seperate CAL for each client computer that is used to access Win 2k server for basic network services.
in Per server licensing the CAL's are assigned to a particular server, each CAL allows one connection per client computer to the server for basic network services
now thats basically for companies but if ur going to be getting certified u need to know a tad on it :)
now
i will tell you how to install over the network in 4 simple steps
1. On the target computer, boot from the network client
2. connect to the distribution server, after you start the network client on the target computer, connect to the shared folder on the distribution server that contains the windows 2k pro installation files
3. Run winnt.exe or winnt32.exe to start the setup program, use winnt.exe for installtion if u are using windows 2.X on the target system, and use winnt32.exe for installation if you are using win 95,98, NT, or 2k on the target system
now this should create a temporary folder on the target system named $Win_nt$.ls
now setup should comp the install files form the shared folder of the distribution server to the $Win_nt$.ls folder on the target computer :)
4. Now set should reboot the target computer and begin instaling win 2k pro :)
Ok now before i get 5 msg's from people asking what a distribution server is i guess ill go over it rather quickly
A distribution server stores the distribution folder structure, the distribution folder structure contains the files necesesary to install win 2k pro over the network, its handy for when you have alot of computers on which to install win 2k pro or for doing multiple win 2k pro installs at the same time, in which you would have to create more then one set of distribution folders
noooo i dont wanna talk about the registry *crys* fine you all win i hope your happy :P
ok first off the editors
Rededt32 and regedit i prefer regedt32 because of its security menu and read-only mode :)
now ill define a few things for you :)
Subtree - the win 2k registry has two subtrees: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_USERS, but to make the info in the registry easier to view, we have 5 predefined subtrees :)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_USERS
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
keys - Keys are analogous to folders and subfolders, keys correspond to hardware or software objects and groups of objects
Entries - Keys contain one of more entries, an entry has three parts : name, data, type, and value
Hive - A hive is a discrete body of keys, subkeys, and entries. Each hive has a corresponding registry file and .Log file located in systemroot\system32\config
i wont get into data types unless someone asks about it then i will gladly post the info :)
now a lil about the registry subtrees
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE contains all configuration data for the local computer, including hardware and os data such as bus type, mem, device drivers, and startup control data
this data remains constant regtardless of who uses the computer
HKEY_USERS contains the system default settings data used to control individual user identities and environments
HKEY_CURRENT_USER contains data about the current user
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT contains software configuration data: object linking and embedding and file class association data
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG contains data on the active hardware profiles extracted from the software and system hives, this information is used to configurew settings such as the device drivers to load and the display resolution to use :)
Registry can be your friend or your enemy :) always backup before you ever mess with anything in the registry
now a friend of mine *cough* halo *cough* said NW Link is a waste of time and i am very open-minded so if u want to learn more about it you can post a question of come to the AO irc server im usually always on :)
basically NW link is microsoft's implementation of IPX/SPX
it allows computers running w2k to communicate with other devices that use IPX/SPX
one thing i will say for all you people going to take the MCSE
If a problem occurs with NW Link its MORE then likely to be an incorrect Frame Type
ok im not going to get into DNS if you want to learn about DNS read RFC 1034 & RFC 1035
or use google dont be scared of google :)
ok tcp/ip time
TCP/IP is a suite of protocols taht provides a set of standards for how computers communicate and how networks are interconnected, the suite of protocols map to a four-layer conceptual model : network interface, internet, transport, and application
makes everyone think about OSI seven layer model eh :P it compares to it
The Internet Layer encapsulates packets into internet datagrams, runs all necessary routing protocols the four Internet LAyer protocols are IP, ARP, ICMP, and IGMP
The Transport layer provides communication sessions between computers the two transport layer protocols are TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol)
The application layer allows applications to gain access to the network and has some standard TCP/IP utilities like FTP TelNet SNMP DNS and etc.
The network interface layer is the base of the model it puts frames on the wire and pulls frames off the wire
Win 2k pro by default uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Config PRotocol)
if someone needs me to go indepth about DHCP i will do so jsut tell me
thats enough for now i will continue this at a later date, my leg is killing me and i want to relax before work if you have any suggestions comments questions Etc jsut post it i will do my best to help you in any way
after all im a very open-minded person and i love to hear comments on articles :)
