Like others said, try covering it up and you'll just dig yourself a deeper grave.....

What was your reason to use a port scanner? Tell us here and we'll let you know if it's a gravedigging reason or a legit security consence reason....

If you were just playing around with a port scanner, then I don't see the big deal. If you try to cover it up -> anything that might happen after will be blamed on you. Be open, you'll probably just get a "Alright, just don't do it again" lecture.

well with a little c4 you could eliminate any machine that might have a record of this, including the email server and hope he dosn't get his mail at home.

of you could tell the truth, no law against it really.

Port scanning is legal. It just seems like a bad thing because it’s usually the first step in not so legal activities. It would be best to tell the truth before he even looks at the logs. Of course you could always suggest that someone else might of hijacked your computer and used it to port scan but good admins will quickly punch holes in your theory and then your in deep Sh*t.

I don't think portscans are illegal. If you just explain to them (and if they are reasonable) I'm sure they'll understand (unless you work with the BOFH)

well if ur boss islike 99% of the system admins out there u have nothing to worry about chances are he wont even check them

I was poking around an employers network once....errrr this one particular time... and stummbled onto somones connection to a server on a high port. This particular machine contained customer information.
so I looked deeper to see what was being transfered. I logged what I found and blew the whistle. OOOpps I was brought into a meeting room with IT manager and friends along with HR. I made the IT sup look bad infront of his boss.... He tried to bullshit his way out of what was happening on the network I showed my log's ......then the sup and I were both looking for a job.


Moral of the story is play on your own network or atleast have a reason for playing on anyone elses before hand.
If you do get caught be honest and dont try to bull**** it makes it worse.

Is port scanning really illegal? It seems harmless. I don't think your boss would mind anyway.

I dont know if it is illeagal but it would be considered "bad form" to scan somone elses network. First question will be why as somone aready stated.
I agree with the fact that most admins do not look at this as a threat or even mess with the logs a whole lot unless there is a problem. I would be carful not to continue scanning for some time. Hope you havent visited any exploit sites on the ports you found open.

Port scanning is just as annoing as somone rinning your doorbell over and over and over....
sooner or later you going to get mad about it and crack some skulls but unless it is creating alot of network traffic or locking up a service its harmless to scan.
