Found this, it relates to an install fault, but the Partition Magic code is the same...........

I?t s abug in the qtparted version together with the 2.6 kernel.
I had thesame problem. You probably used the install disk to partition your drive.
Try these options:
- in your bios change the mode for your harddrive to lba.
Some people were able to log in this way. If you install using this mode you shouldn?t get a problem. This didn?t work for me.

- when booting into XP works use a program like partition magic to correct the incorrect partition info on the drive.

FIXMBR WILL NOT WORK UNLESS YOU REMOVE ALL PARTITIONS!!!!
This is a nasy bug....
