Here is an interesting article. The bottom line is that you can have a block list or opt out. If you opt out the block list is deleted. All opting out does is prevent personalization. You still get the ads.
I use Firefox 9 with ABP and Ghostery so I never see an ad and trackers, etc. are blocked.
All history and cookies except from preferred sites are deleted upon exit.
